Hello! I was born and raised in Honolulu, HI then hopped to Hawai'i island to pursue a B.S in Marine Science at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. In studying the marine environment, I learned how large and interconnected the natural world is and in turn how important the conservation of remote places like Kuaihelani (Midway Atoll) is. Coming to Kuaihelani I bring an open mind, a vast curiosity and respect for the journeys of these creatures. From my time being here I have honed my identification skills (both plants and animals), learned much about the unique life histories of the organisms here and am becoming more educated on working with and living alongside wildlife. I still have much to learn from Kuaihelani and am excited to absorb and share the knowledge of this place!

Micah is a six-month volunteer on Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge. Less funding these days translates to fewer paid refuge staff and fewer volunteer positions that need food and housing and require mentorship, training and guidance by paid staff Friends of Midway Atoll are funding this season! The volunteer positions are beyond critical to help wildlife thrive on Midway. Their work includes counting and keeping track of birds in designated plots so biologists understand the impacts to their food source and threats to their livelihood out at sea.
