The Volunteer Crew Leader will train and lead a team of up to four volunteers during a six-month assignment on Kuaihelani (Midway Atoll). Working alongside the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Crew Leader will participate in a multitude of conservation projects, including:
- Monitoring seabirds and Koloa pōhaka (Laysan ducks)
- Propagating native plants and collecting seeds
- Removing marine debris and invasive plants
- Conducting data entry and quality control
- Maintaining equipment and wildlife water sources
- Assisting with wildlife rehabilitation, including short-term care of birds affected by botulism
- Supporting additional Refuge projects as needed
The position also plays an important leadership role by coordinating the six-month volunteer program, including recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding new volunteers.
Fieldwork requires the use of different equipment, including herbicide spray packs, hand tools, utility task vehicles, golf carts, government vessels up to 28 feet in length, and government-issued laptops and tablets.
Qualifications
Applicants must qualify for the GS-7 level through one of the following:
- Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level, including habitat restoration, wildlife management, biological monitoring, data collection, use of GPS or wildlife tracking equipment, leadership of crews or volunteers, and assisting with technical reports.
- Education: One year (18 semester hours) of directly related graduate-level coursework. (Transcripts required.)
- Combination: A qualifying combination of graduate education and specialized experience. (Transcripts required.)
