The cute chick flicks are coming in! Enjoy one of the first Ka'upu (Black-footed Albatross) chicks to hatch on Kuaihelani (Hawaiian name for Midway Atoll) within Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge–arguably the largest albatross incubation and hatching factory on the planet! Much gratitude goes to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Volunteers for using their non-working hours to capture and share the following videos. First up are three cute Ka'upu chick flicks by Dan Rapp he captured on January 17, 2025.
The Ka'upu are hatching on que before the Mōlī or Laysan Albatross. For those who follow the Makalena or Short-tailed Albatross couple George and Geraldine, unfortunately their egg did not hatch this year. The parents were reportedly very attentive so it not for a lack of bad parenting!
