So many Midway stories! The original Gooney Gazette was published when the atoll was a major military base. The mimeographed newsletter kept troops informed about day-to-day affairs (e.g., “New record player radio attachment donated [along with] an assortment of not-so-new records”) and offered the occasional humorous relief for marines and civilians stationed at this remote outpost. The Gazette also covered world news, including military actions on other fronts. Thanks to Colonel John F. Miniclier, who was stationed on the atoll during the Battle of Midway, we have copies of Gazettes from December 1941 into March 1942. What a treasure! We would love to expand the collection and would be happy to hear from other Midway veterans who might have Gooney Gazettes of days gone by to share.
Enjoy this window into life on Midway Atoll during this pivotal period.
