Being the Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge and Battle of Midway National Memorial Refuge Manager is an honor and a privilege that I do not take lightly,” Pam shares “The cultural, historical and environmental significance of Midway Atoll and the greater Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument instills a sense of awe and wonder and a deep sense of responsibility for the future of this refuge, memorial and monument. The men and women who came before me, and those who are here today – whether they are contractors, Service employees, volunteers, interns, or members of Friends of Midway Atoll – have all felt the same sense of pride and responsibility to do their very best to preserve, conserve and adaptively manage the unique resources of the refuge, memorial, and monument. The management, logistical, and ecological challenges are great, but everyone perseveres because we know we have no choice but to move forward each and every day. The Friends of Midway Atoll play a key role in supporting the refuge and memorial by advocating the needs of the refuge and monument to Congress, sharing their collective knowledge and expertise regarding the history and ecological resources of Midway Atoll, financially supporting land management and research activities, supporting events such as Battle of Midway commemorations, and educating the public about the refuge and memorial through social media. The Friends of Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge passionately support the refuge and monument and through their support we are able to accomplish more than we would without them.”
