NUMBER TWO

Sloughing off the Fluff for the Sturdy Seaworthy Plummage

Perhaps these albatross will make it into the semi-finals in the 2025 Mōlī-Do Pageant held on Island of Kaua’i this year.

The Mōlī (Laysan) and Ka’upu (Black-footed) albatross are currently strutting funny wind blown feather-dos on Kauihelani (Midway Atoll). Their bones and bodies are transforming into well designed ocean going flyers capable of sustaining flight at sea while using the updrafts created by surface waves. They will learn to visually que in on surface prey on a voyage that could last years before they return to their natal nest site area on Midway Atoll National Wildlife Refuge.
